JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – When we talk about preparing for the cold, you hear the Weather Authority team talk about protecting the P’s: people, pipes, plants, and pets.
EPIC Outreach, an organization that uses animals to help people, shared these tips with us on how you can better protect your pets.
In cold winter weather, bring animals indoors.
If they can’t come inside, make sure you provide an insulated area for them outside. Hay and straw can keep them warm. You can increase the amount of material to keep your animals warm, and regularly check and replace damp bedding to maintain hygiene.
Animals require additional calories to maintain body heat in colder temperatures, so make sure they get enough to eat. You must provide them with a well-balanced and nutritious diet.
Check their water bowls to make sure the water doesn’t freeze. Ensure their water supply remains unfrozen by replacing it regularly or utilizing heated bowls.
And regularly check on animals to ensure they are healthy and comfortable. Keep an eye out for any signs of distress or discomfort.
EPIC Outreach has been in existence since 2015 offering opportunities to bridge the human-animal connection to children and adults creating positive changes and fostering compassionate ways of living. For more information on EPIC Outreach, check out their website here.
