Premiere Date, Time & Full Release Schedule

HBO’s miniseries The Regime is making a grand entrance. If you want to tune into the anticipated dark comedy starring Kate Winslet, find out how to watch The Regime and when new episodes of the satirical series will be released.

Created by Succession writer and producer Will Tracy, the limited series follows “a year within the walls of the palace of a modern European regime as it begins to unravel.” Winslet portrays Elena Vernham, the Chancellor of an imaginary European nation, while Matthias Schoenaerts stars opposite Winslet as Corporal Herbert Zubak, a disgraced soldier who becomes her trusted advisor. Guillaume Gallienne, Andrea Riseborough, Martha Plimpton, and Hugh Grant also appear in The Regime.

“It’s a love story between these two people who have this kind of dreamy vibe, even when they first see each other,” Tracy told Entertainment Weekly ahead of the Season 1 premiere. “It’s a little bit like Sleeping Beauty. ‘I know you. I walked with you once upon a dream.’ I wanted to carry that somewhat stylized, dreamy, middle European fairy-tale tone throughout the show. I’m not sure if that relates to any other piece of pop culture, which probably made it a little bit harder to describe exactly what the show was.”

Tracy added that he didn’t write the role of Elena for Winslet but noted that he would have been “heartbroken” if she didn’t star in the lead role.

“As she started to develop the character and the way she looked and sounded and behaved, then I’m writing towards that,” he explained. “She [Winslet] really thought about how she would dress, what her hair would be like from scene to scene, from moment to moment, depending on who she’s meeting with, who she’s talking to, how she wants to be perceived, what message she wants to send,” he continued. “So much of the character is wrapped up in the presentation and the image. Kate was quite brilliant preparing for all of that.”

Meanwhile, Winslet told IndieWire that she didn’t look to specific figures for inspiration for Elena “because I didn’t think that would be a sensible choice.”

“I was able to lean into these absurd, totally irrational, sometimes reckless sides of this invented imagined character, and coming up with ways to play a lot of those scenes was really a huge amount of fun. There was always, always the element of theatrics,” she described. “And she couldn’t just be one way or say certain things or shout or screech or be physically, overtly sexual because it had to be all for a reason.”
