While observing Bottega Veneta’s most recent collection, I was struck by a show that provided both charm and practicality: Button-up shirts were layered over colorful turtlenecks; there was a combination of colors like pale pinks and bold reds; and a couple of looks that featured multiple jackets layered over each other. “Blazy’s clothes — not all but many — can function as an inspiring guide for how to dress,” writes our very own Cathy Horyn. And sure, everyone might not have the ability to shell out Bottega money, but maybe they will take away one of these elements to add to their look. Or at least, that’s what we think the brand’s creative director, Matthieu Blazy, hopes.
But if you look a little closer, Blazy took this concept further. The creative director depended on layering concepts while examining the boundless possibilities of everyday silhouettes. These tactics weren’t unique in their use per se; an overshirt atop a button-down, or an oxford shirt beneath a V-neck. Instead, it was his use of high-low contrast and texture that provided added oomph — a leather shirt, a deep burgundy glove, and maroon shirting paired with chocolate brown.
In a recent TikTok video from stylist Allison Bornstein, she explains the visual intrigue of contrast, a color technique Blazy experimented with this season. “High-contrast looks have a lot of contrast, like all black, and low-contrast looks have a more neutral lean, but doesn’t have to be all white or all beige.”
Blazy left us with various ideas for dressing for the in-between season ahead. Here, shop four layering lessons we learned from Bottega Veneta’s show.

During early spring and fall, the weather is humid and often spontaneous. Why choose between two shirts when you can wear both at the same time? Pair a more oversize shirt jacket over a classic button-down for extra texture, volume, and intrigue.

A trenchcoat is by no means a newfound discovery, but how about when it’s worn with contrasting layers? Use the classic beige hue as a neutral base and add a pop of red, emerald green, burnt orange, or navy blue. Then, keep the turtleneck tonal.

Menswear codes have been making their way into our wardrobes for a few seasons now, and this look is no different. Add a layered look by wearing a brown leather coat atop a gray V-neck sweater. Then, increase the details with a leather button-down beneath that sweater.

While Bottega’s cape-like dress is probably out of budget, there are ways to incorporate the essence of this look into your everyday. For Spring, take Zara’s semi-sheer slip dress and wear it over a second-skin turtleneck bodysuit. Add a necklace and oversize earrings.
