How to prepare for incoming severe weather

LEXINGTON, Ky. (WKYT)—The weather has made for an active start to the work week, and local officials are planning how best to keep Kentuckians safe.

“Before weather strikes, have a plan; make sure you know where you are going to go when something happens,” said Emily Fay with Lexington Fayette County’s Division of Emergency Management.

Finding a safe place in your home will be important as we continue into severe weather season. Avoiding exterior walls and getting to the lowest point will keep you and your family safe.

“So those winds are going to kick up, and they are going to kick up debris, and sometimes that debris is a rock, and if that rock goes through a window, you could be hit by shards of glass or even the rock itself,” Fay said. “So you want to make sure you are away from any potential threats like a door flying open or a window shattering. Just protect yourself.”

According to bestneighborhood.org, 43.81% of people live in apartments in Lexington alone. When it comes to both mobile homes and high-rise apartment structures – a plan to relocate ahead of activity might be needed.

“You want to get to the lowest level interior place you can. So if you are in an enclosed apartment, that interior hallway on the bottom floor or if you can’t get to there, the interior room in your apartment complex. You want to get as low as you can be.”

“It’s important to stay safe. So, if you need to wait a little while before leaving work, it might be best to do so, same thing with going into work. Remember your safety is the most important. We can replace your things, but we can’t replace yourself,” Fay added.
