How To Unlock Destiny 2’s Exotic Class Item Mission, And Farm Them After

Destiny 2 launched a secret quest yesterday that is probably the closest thing they’ve done to Whisper of the Worm since that mission famously launched on Io years ago. It’s the way you unlock and eventually farm the exotic class items on each class, and it’s…more complicated than say, running a harder version of the finale mission Excision over and over. Rather, it’s a mission called “Dual Destiny.”

So, how do you do it? Buckle up.

  • You need to complete Overthrow in full in each region, The Landing, The Blooming and The Impasse. You need to do this in one session without going back to orbit. But before you go run all of them right now, read the next step.
  • After each Overthrow boss is beaten, there will be some dialogue and in the corner it says a Secret Keeper on the Witch Queen has spawned somewhere on the map. This is a Taken Wizard on each map that you will have to find and kill before the five minute Overthrow reset timer is up using a different sort of (pretty easy) mechanic.
  • The locations for each Keeper are: The Landing – The very large cave system to the right of spawn, pretty close to the Lost Sector entrance. The Blooming – The somewhat hard to get to area in the back of the map that is sometimes marked by a Taken eye when there’s an Overthrow event in there. The Impasse – The area to the right of the Lost Sector where there is often an Overthrow event.
  • After this, a green beam of light will spawn over The Refraction, the winding area between The Landing and The Blooming. You can get there from either direction but I think it’s faster to go from The Blooming.
  • Once there, you will see indicators for two chunky Subjugators nearby. You have to kill them to about half, they teleport away an leave an orb you have to go dunk back where you came from. There is a timer on this part but provided you can do halfway decent damage you should be fine. I did it solo and I had about 2:30 left on the clock. So yes, the entire unlock part can be done solo, but the quest itself cannot.

So, we move on to the next step and batch of info after the mission is unlocked, and it will permanently appear as a node across all your characters now.

  • The mission, Dual Destiny, must be played by two players and two players only. You cannot solo it, it will not even let you start it. You cannot play with three people. The entire timed mission is based around mechanics that require not just two people, but two people and significant communication. You can Fireteam Finder for it but again, you will need a mic.
  • Once you beat the mission you will collect your class item from Ghost, and it will say that you can farm the mission itself for more or there is now a chance class items will drop from chests in Pale Heart. You will have to beat the mission at least once on each class to get the chest drop ability on those other classes.

So there are your two options. You can farm the mission for a guaranteed drop, but this will always require a second person and comms. Or you can farm chests from the zone, from Lost Sectors or from Overthrow. There is bad luck protection here and higher tier chests are worth more (Overthrow completion, for instance) but I’m not sure what the overall drop rates are. It’s…not an ideal setup for farming an item with 60 possible combinations, but here we are. Fortunately, the mission itself is one of the best they’ve ever done.
