Where And How To Start ‘Elden Ring: Shadow Of The Erdtree’

We are here. Elden Ring’s Shadow of the Erdtree expansion is releasing to the public after receiving rave reviews from critics this week, myself included. But if you haven’t been paying too much attention, you will log on and…have no idea what to do.

There is no pop-up saying “thanks for buying Shadow of the Erdtree, head over here to start!” and some giant flashing arrow on your map telling you where to go. There is nothing. So here you are, trying to figure out what the hell is going on.

You start Shadow of the Erdtree from one specific spot on the map. You need to interact with the Miquella Egg, which is in the room where you fight Mohg, Lord of Blood, in Mohgwyn Dynasty Mausoleum in the Mohgwyn Palace.

This is an area underground in the south east corner of the map. If you are “ready” for the expansion, having already beat Mohg, you will have access to the egg through a site of grace just a few feet in front of it. Here is where that is located on the map:

If you do not have access to it, or the Palace as a whole, there are two options to get there, though this will not be a full guide for those, as I’ll link you to more in depth ones.

  • The first is doing the full questline for White Mask Varre which will allow you to teleport into the Palace as part of it.
  • The second is assembling the two halves of the Haligtree Medallion, using the Grand Lift of Rold, and finding a teleporter on the far western edge of the Consecrated Snowfield. That is on the map here:

Once in the palace, you need to make your way west and ascend the mountain to the very obvious boss area on top. Then, beating Mohg is another thing altogether, and will depend on your build and skill level. Recommended level for the fight is 80, some say it’s 100 or more. You can make the fight much easier by finding the Purifying Crystal Tear which negates Mohg’s Curse blood loss effect. That can be found at the Second Church of Marika.

So yes, the egg. The weird egg with the hand coming out of it. Some players may already know/assume that’s where to start, but I know a lot haven’t. And last we checked, only two-thirds or so of players had killed Mohg, which is required to start the DLC, so we may have some confused folks at launch here if people haven’t been paying attention. Hopefully this helps.
