“…I bore you on eagles’ wings and brought you to myself.” Ex.19:4b ESV
Sudan is currently embroiled in a destructive civil war. The only comparative safe haven is in the isolated Nuba mountains region.
Background to the persecution of Nuba Christians
On April 15, 2023, the militarist regime in Sudan collapsed, and an internal power struggle between Islamists plunged the country into war and chaos.
Sudan is now recognized as the world’s worst humanitarian crisis.
War-induced famine claims more than 100 lives per day.
The Nuba is home to Sudan’s largest community of Christians.
As a result, the Nuba people have been the number one target of religious and ethnic cleansing by Islamist militants in the country.
The indigenous church in the Nuba has been leading the way in responding to this crisis, helping new arrivals of ‘returnees’ fleeing the war to survive, settle, and rebuild their lives.
Persecution Project is working alongside Nuba Christians in organizing an Emergency Airlift to deliver access to safe water, relief and shelter items, lifesaving medicines and medical services as well as strengthening the local church capacity to provide spiritual nourishment and encouragement.
Sudan has been broken into three pieces. The media focus is on the two largest areas — areas controlled by Islamist forces.
But a third region has emerged as Sudan’s only safe haven and glimmer of hope: the Nuba mountains in Southern Kordofan State.
