OMAHA, Neb. (WOWT) – According to the Nebraska State Patrol, the peak for deer related crashes is during mating season, which is typically late October to early December.
Officials are advising drivers to be extra cautious at dawn and at dusk, when deer appear the most.
“I would guess a deer crash happens at least once a day in [Nebraska] and in the Omaha area,” Sgt. David Flohr with NSP, said. “It’s not just crashes with deer, but also the roadway obstructions that can be a danger to the motoring public too.”
A number one tip if you see a deer on the road is to not swerve to dodge it.
“That can cause more damage secondary after a collision with a deer,” Flohr said. “We recommend steering the same course of action as you’re driving to avoid losing control of your vehicle.”
If you do hit a deer, move your car to safety and call for help. Then, to begin the repair process you need to file a claim with your insurance.
Flohr told First Alert 6 that state troopers are always available on the roadside when you need them.
“We come out and complete crash reports and assist drivers in getting help that they need to safely get off the road,” Flohr said.
To avoid a crash on the road if you see a deer, a simple way is to honk.
Flohr said it’s important to always pay attention to the road.
“Wear seatbelts and not drive distracted especially during these holiday times,” Flohr said. “Focus on the deer and focus on getting to your destination safely.”
The Nebraska State Patrol also said that if you see a deer, bear in mind there may be more in the area. They also recommend using your high beam headlights safely to expand your field of vision.
