From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it’s investigating the financials of Elon Musk’s pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, ‘The A Word’, which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.

At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.

NFL fans are enjoying a Christmas treat as Beyoncé performs the halftime show for Netflix’s NFL Christmas Gameday broadcast.

This year, the streaming giant is hosting the two Christmas games between the Kansas City Chiefs and the Pittsburgh Steelers at 1 p.m. EST and the Baltimore Ravens and the Houston Texans at 4:30 p.m. EST.

The 32-time Grammy-winning pop superstar, 43, took the field at the NRG Stadium in her hometown of Houston halfway through the second game.

For the first time ever, she is performing live renditions of tracks off her latest album, Cowboy Carter. And she is expected to be joined by artists featured on the record, which could potentially include Dolly Parton, Miley Cyrus and Post Malone.

Beyoncé is no stranger to the NFL stage. She headlined the 2013 Super Bowl halftime show and also made a guest appearance when Coldplay headlined in 2016.

Other Christmas Day performances included a pre-taped recording of Mariah Carey’s holiday chart-topper “All I Want for Christmas Is You” ahead of the first game, and the Grammy-winning a cappella group Pentatonix singing the national anthem at the second.

Who can watch today’s NFL games and Beyoncé halftime show?

Netflix’s 282.3 million subscribers in more than 190 countries can stream the games, marking the first time one outlet has distributed an NFL game globally. Netflix has the games available in five languages — English, French, Spanish, Portuguese and German.

Netflix had problems streaming the Mike Tyson-Jake Paul fight on Nov. 14. The bout peaked at 65 million concurrent streams, including 38 million concurrent streams in the United States. According to the website Down Detector, nearly 85,000 viewers logged problems with outages or streaming leading up to and during the fight.

There were no signs of trouble early Wednesday during the game after a couple of blunders during the pregame show. The broadcast opened with roughly 10 seconds of silence because it appeared studio host Kay Adams’ microphone wasn’t turned on.

The biggest test should come at halftime of the Ravens-Texans game when Beyoncé performs live at NRG Stadium.
