Demi Moore in “The Substance.”
For viewers who want to see the film that earned Demi Moore her first Golden Globe the body horror hit The Substance is now available on streaming.
Moore won the Best Female Actor in a Motion Picture — Musical or Comedy for her performance in the hit horror film and Hollywood satire Sunday night at the 82nd Annual Golden Globes in Los Angeles.
In addition to being nominated for Best Actress for the Critics Choice Awards, Moore will find out soon if she’ll be in the running for Best Actress honors at the Screen Actors Guild Awards and the Oscars.
The logline for The Substance reads, “A fading celebrity takes a black-market drug: a cell-replicating substance that temporarily creates a younger, better version of herself.”
Moore plays the celebrity, Elizabeth Sparkle, a one-time Hollywood star who begins to inject herself with the drug after being fired on her 50th birthday from her successful TV aerobics show by her sexist boss, Harvey (Dennis Quaid). The “younger, better version of herself,” which Elizabeth names Sue, is played by Margaret Qualley.
Rated R, The Substance is written and directed by Coralie Fargeat. In addition to being nominated for Best Motion Picture — Musical or Comedy by the Golden Globes, Fargeat received nominations for Best Director and Best Screenplay from the organization.
Distributed in theaters by Mubi, The Substance is now available on the Mubi streaming platform. Mubi memberships cost $14.99 per month, but an annual membership is also available for $120.50, which is about 33% less.
Viewers who don’t subscribe to Mubi can also purchase or rent The Substance on digital streaming via premium video on demand.
Currently, The Substance is available to purchase on PVOD for $19.99 or rent for $5.99 for a 48-hour period on such digital platforms as Prime Video, AppleTV and VUDU.

According to The Numbers, The Substance earned $16.4 million domestically and $32.8 million internationally for a worldwide box office gross of $49.2 million during its theatrical run.
Per Variety, The Substance reportedly had a budget of $17.5 million before prints and advertising costs.
On the review front, The Substance was one of the highest-rated horror movies on Rotten Tomatoes in 2024.
According to the critic aggregation site, The Substance earned a 90% “fresh” rating based on 347 reviews.
The RT Critics Consensus for the film reads, “Audaciously gross, wickedly clever, and possibly Demi Moore’s finest hour, The Substance is a gasp-inducing feat from writer-director Coralie Fargeat.”
The Substance also received a 75% “fresh” rating on the RT Popcornmeter based on 1,000-plus verified user ratings.
One audience member who was impressed with The Substance was Oscar-winning filmmaker Guillermo del Toro.
