How to submit | Monitoring groundwater reservoir dynamics

This Collection supports and amplifies research related to:

SDG 6 – Clean water and sanitation

SDG 12 – Responsible consumption and production

This Collection welcomes original research exploring innovative technologies or robust modelling approaches to monitor groundwater recharge and drainage. Studies using observational data to understand current water demands, or estimate future requirements in different scenarios, are also welcome.

Often considered a hidden resource, groundwater reservoirs are key for agricultural productivity, ecosystem health, and human consumption. Understanding the complex balance between recharge rates, storage capacity, and anthropogenic extraction, is essential for sustainable water management, particularly in the context of increasing demands due to population growth and climate change. However, understanding the dynamics of aquifers is often challenging, given their difficult access and highly variability according to multiple factors, such as geological surrounding or climate. Recent advancements in data collection technology and analytics, including machine learning, satellite imagery, or geophysical methods, can contribute to overcome these challenges.
