PHOENIX (AZFamily) — Right now, it’s kitten season as litters of adorable kitties pop up across the alley. While their sweet little faces may be irresistible, some Valley nonprofits are urging people not to “kit-nap” them!
In 2022, Arizona Animal Welfare League rescued over 1,900 cats, with over 1,200 being kittens. Many local shelters, including AAWL, are overwhelmed with kittens and need the community’s support to help save the furry felines.
Kim Vermillion from the Arizona Animal Welfare League joined Good Morning Arizona on Sunday morning to tell animal lovers what they should do if they come across some cute kittens.
“So we’re seeing calls all the time for people finding orphaned kittens that are under eight weeks old and don’t have their mom and they need our help. What we’re trying to say is that they’re better off with their mom. Unless you know that the mom’s not coming back over eight hours, then that’s when you can kind of intervene,” she explained. “It can be hard to just leave a kitten because your instinct is to sort of take care of them. Maybe bring them home, give them food in eight hours. That’s the good time period to wait.”
Vermillion says other things people can do are to leave food and water out for the cute felines. You can also build a small outdoor shelter to house the cats and their mom.
