BOWLING GREEN, Ky. (WBKO) – With the northern lights in the Kentucky sky Friday night, hundreds of photos were sent capturing the amazing spectacle.
If you didn’t see them in the night sky last night, you can see them again Saturday night as well.
To capture the northern lights, here are a few tips to get the best shot!
Ensure you are away from city lights or any potential light pollution (at least 15 miles away is far enough). Once you are away from city lights, look towards the northern horizon of the sky.
iPhone 11 or newer devices have a mode called “night mode” to capture photos in darker scenes. This mode truly captures the northern lights under clearer sky conditions. To use this feature, ensure your iPhone is in “Photo” mode (not video or portrait).
Utilizing this feature requires the user and device to be still to avoid motion blur while capturing the photo. It may be beneficial to prop your phone against a structure or object that won’t move to provide additional stability.
Swiping up on your screen while the camera app is open should display a circular moon icon with lines behind it. A slider will then allow you to select a time that your camera will allow additional light into its lens to show the northern lights. Using the “auto” option should allow enough time.
Press capture and stay still! While the photo is being taken, yellow and white crosshairs may show up if your phone has slightly moved during capture. If this happens, line the crosshairs up to the original direction you were taking the photo. If you do not see the crosshairs, you are staying perfectly still!
