I was at LIDO festival this past weekend, as temperatures soared to the mid-20s, when something became abundantly clear. Miniskirts, that most classic of items, are having a major moment in London right now. Not just regular miniskirts, though – rather, itty-bitty ones, the sort that graze just below the underwear line. Whether it was denim, tiered or puffball, the micro miniskirt was everywhere I looked, from the Charli xcx pit to the burger stall queue and the frenzied night bus home.

But how to style the micro mini? It really depends on what skirt you’re going for, and where you’re headed. Some will require cowboy boots or pulled-up socks and kitten heels, whereas others will require… well, not much at all. So, as festival season looms ahead, here’s the British Vogue guide to styling a teeny-tiny miniskirt.

Puffball skirts, otherwise known as bubble skirts, have been creeping on us for a while, but this summer they seem to have really hit their stride. They’re a sort of “personality skirt” in and of themselves, so can be best styled with something plain like a white tee or a shirt, depending on the weather. British Vogue’s Julia Hobbs thinks bubble skirts aren’t just a garment, but a lifestyle choice. “The Bubble Girl is busy and anti-hedonistic,” she wrote earlier this year. “She bookmarks Adidas Jisho yoga flats on Vinted, and scours her DMs for a personal assistant who can help archive her vintage Margiela collection and goes to sober raves at Club Are.”
