The V-neck has been ridiculed in recent years – my husband, for one, clung onto his Topman V-neck T-shirts from his university days for slightly too long, leading to many jokes from friends about his style. In 2025, though, the V-neck has become cool again – although admittedly in cashmere form, not accompanying the slogan tees that 18 year olds wore during Freshers Week in 2008.

Earlier in the year, Alice Cary declared that 2025’s stand-out knit is a V-neck jumper, with The Row, Prada and Bottega Veneta all making a case for this silhouette. This theme continued in the recent spring/summer 2026 collections – Jack McCollough and Lazaro Hernandez’s first collection for Loewe featured preppy oversized knits layered over shirts with purposefully dishevelled collars, while Jonathan Anderson’s womenswear debut included an oatmeal knit with collegiate stripes and a deep plunging V.

V-neck jumpers are a staple in corporate offices – but the trending styles are less uniform in 2025, as seen in this month’s batch of street-style images. The weight of your jumper will also give a very different overall look – ultra-fine knits are Miu Miu-coded and can be worn instead of a T-shirt tucked into waistbands, while more oversized knits pair beautifully with midi-skirts – an outfit pairing that was popular this fashion month.

The street-style set also served up a lesson in layering this autumn, with V-necks worn over buttoned-up Oxford shirts, polo tops or T-shirts for a more preppy take on the knit. Meanwhile, brands like Bottega Veneta and The Row favour a chunky wool or cashmere composition and a high V-neck that just grazes the collar bone. This style looks particularly elegant with other quiet luxury staples, such as wide-leg tailored trousers or jeans and simple, but polished, accessories.
