If your morning drive feels more like an obstacle course, you’re not imagining it: Pothole season has arrived in Chicago.
NBC 5 Responds found 8,529 pothole complaints have already been filed this year, averaging 170 reports every day. Data from 311 shows it takes the city of Chicago between three and 12 days to repair potholes once reported.
So what should you do if one of those craters damages your car? Here’s what to know and how you might get reimbursed.
How to File a Pothole Damage Claim in Chicago
If your vehicle is damaged on a City of Chicago street, you need to file a claim with the Chicago City Clerk’s Office.
Required documents:
You must submit all three of the following documents to be considered:
- A completed and signed Damage to Vehicle Claim Form
The form is available on the City Clerk’s website. - Proof of repair costs: either a paid repair receipt or two written estimates for repair
- A copy of a police report for the incident
How to File a Pothole Damage Claim in Cook County
If the damage happened on a Cook County-maintained road, the process is slightly different.

Filing a Pothole Claim with the Illinois Department of Transportation (IDOT)
If your car is damaged by a pothole on the highway, getting reimbursed by IDOT is more challenging. The state is only responsible if IDOT knew about the pothole and had a reasonable amount of time to repair it or warn drivers.
That means if a pothole appeared overnight and wasn’t reported yet, your claim may be denied. Claims can take up to 90 days to investigate.
